Merchandising is a Portfolio within Target – Product Engineering that strives to provide reliable data that is core to our enterprise retail operations, including foundational data and aggregation services at scale for retail and commerce platforms. We deal with data around Pricing, Promotions, Item, Supplier, Owned Brand, Merch Planning, Space Presentation & Transitions(SPT) & Intelligence Automation.

As a Principal Engineer in Merchandising, you are a thought leader and trusted partner of product and technology teams defining solutions to highly complex and usually abstract business and technology problems. You solve problems impacting multiple lines of business and technologies often within capabilities critical to Target's success. You define architecture strategies to deliver new or evolving business and technology capabilities and align partners to those strategies. You define and drive delivery of the subsequent architectural solutions that would evolve the Merchandising products.

  • Apply your abilities to solve large abstract problems, see the big picture, take partners, and drive outcomes as you define strategies to lead Merchandising into the future. Your strategic visioning directly contributes to Target's business and technology.

  • You clearly and concisely describe problems, opportunities, and vision in ways product and engineering partners and executive leadership understand. You provide clear guidance for teams to implement solutions and other PEs to understand and articulate vision to their partners as needed.

  • You are a Merchandising Data platform expert and educator who works towards data accuracy and drive towards Merchandising Capabilities to be the single source of information. You understand all aspects of Merchandising Systems and its application to solving business or technical problems. You communicate with and educate engineers, product owners, and all levels of leadership in language understandable for their role answering questions and providing required clarity where needed. You possess a broad understanding of Target's technology, infrastructure, security and compliance landscapes and apply that as you define solutions and guide teams during implementation. You influence engineers to understand and follow policies, standards, and guidelines established to govern solutions.

  • You are a curious, active learner who seeks out and understands emerging technology and its implications to Target. You partner with your engineering team to drive proof-of-concepts as needed and clearly communicate findings to the organization. You also embody industry best engineering practices and create a culture for learning & growth.

  • You are a valued leader and team member who listens and understands other viewpoints, makes the right connections, and drives results that matter enabling Target to deliver exceptional experiences to guests and team members. You are expected to mentor, and coach leads into next in line PE's.

About you:

  • Four-year degree or equivalent experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to communicate technical solutions to technical and non-technical partners
  • Stay current with new and evolving technologies via formal and self-directed education
  • Demonstrated experience building solutions with microservices and event-based architecture using JVM-based languages Demonstrated experience leading the design and delivery of enterprise-scale solutions within a large enterprise where the solutions spanned multiple lines of business
  • Demonstrated experience defining architecture strategy for a new line of business or enterprise technology capability and driving delivery of the resulting solutions
  • Experienced in complex problem solving where the scope of problems is unclear
  • Demonstrated experience communicating, influencing, and selling ideas to executive leadership
  • Experience as a technology or architecture leader responsible educating, influencing, and supporting business and technology partners
  • Track record of driving outcomes in self-directed manner
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Architecture teams in setting technical direction across Core data products and drive technology lifecycle management and communication of standards/Outcomes to the engineering team
  • Work with engineering leaders to build a high performing engineering team and provide technical leadership, coaching, motivation and participate in the selection of technical talent
  • Develop whitepapers, patents, contribution to open-source community, attend/present in conferences
  • Broad tech stack – Springboot, Java, Kotlin, Elastic Search, Kafka, ReactJS, Postgres, Oracle
